Longevity Hacks From A Performance Professional

There’s a lot in the news when it comes to longevity (TK). With so much information out there, what can you do when it comes to living a long and healthy life that will give you the best return on investment? Mindbodygreen.com spoke to performance doctor Dr. Kien Vuu for his top longevity hacks.

Vuu, who is the author of the book Thrive State: Your Blueprint for Optimal Health, Longevity, and Peak Performance, shares his input on the top longevity hacks the outlet’s podcast. You can give the podcast episode a listen here – but check out some of his top tips that are also budget-friendly (they’re free!).

Manage your stress levels. While you can’t eliminate all stress from your life, Vuu recommneds finding the strategies that work best for you in terms of managing your stress well. To get a good sense of your stress levels, you may want to consider a device that tracks your heart rate variability (as this is an indicator of your stress levels). He notes that the greater the variance in your heart rate, the greater you are connected with your parasympathetic nervous system (which is related to being in a state of healing).

Get into a state of hormesis. As we mentioned above, you can’t eliminate all stress from your life, and the truth is you need some stressors. Hormesis is a concept: you experience short, intermittent bouts of stressors, which then trigger cellular processes that make you more resilient both mentally and physically, which in turn, gives you a longevity boost. MindBodyGreen shares that Vuu uses the example of fasting; you fast, which puts stress on your body, switches on certain pathways in the body, which kickstarts your body into cleaning mode by getting rid of intracellular waste and renewing on a cellular level.
